Building Resilient Communities Through Trade Over Aid

Since its launch in 2025, the Trade Over Aid (TOA) Initiative has marked a decisive shift in how communities in Western Kenya region approach resilience and empowerment. In the past, many grassroots households and vulnerable groups were heavily reliant on short-term aid, which often provided immediate relief but did little to build lasting independence. This dependency limited opportunities for self-reliance and left communities exposed to recurring economic shocks. TOA emerged as a response to this challenge, offering a new vision: to replace aid dependency with trade-led empowerment, dignity, and sustainable growth.

At present, Women Business Hub has developed a strong collaborative partnership with INUA Village SACCO (IVS) to strengthen the initiative and actively lay the foundations for resilient local economies. The TOA is strengthening productive capacities of women and youth, expanding market access, and integrating local businesses into regional and global value chains. Investments in infrastructure, digital skills, and trade-related training are enabling Western Kenya communities to absorb shocks more effectively and to participate meaningfully in modern markets. Through the Women Business Hub and Inua Village Sacco partnership, TOA is also reinforcing local and cross-border trade systems, creating safety nets for families, and ensuring that vulnerable groups are empowered through participatory, community-driven approaches. This work is already shifting young people and women from dependency to autonomy, while embedding economic empowerment and dignity at the heart of grassroots transformation.

Looking to the future, Women Business Hub through TOA initiative envisions communities that are fully self-reliant, resilient, and globally connected. By 2026 and beyond, the initiative will deepen its commitment to trade-led resilience, focusing on climate-smart and sustainable value chains, digital transformation, and regional integration through frameworks such as the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). The goal is to ensure that local businesses not only withstand shocks but also thrive in competitive markets, reducing reliance on volatile international aid flows. Vulnerable groups will remain central to this journey, with community-based decision-making guiding investments and shaping inclusive growth.

In essence, TOA Initiative reflects a journey from dependency to resilience, from short-term aid to long-term empowerment, and from isolated local economies to vibrant participants in regional and global trade. It is a program rooted in the past lessons of aid reliance, grounded in present efforts to build capacity and dignity, and driven by a future vision of sustainable, inclusive prosperity.

Why it is important to strengthen the Systems of community based organizations

Community organizations and networks are uniquely positioned to interact with affected communities, respond quickly to community needs and issues, and engage with affected and vulnerable groups. They offer direct services to communities while also advocating for better programming and policy environments. This allows them to influence the development, reach, implementation, and oversight of public systems and policies, as well as the contribution of a community to health.
